Here at Oliver Ames, there is a small club called the Library Leadership committee. It is a cheery club that devotes themselves to making the OA library a safe and inviting place for all students to come and enjoy their time.
Ms. Lane, the LLC’s advisor, is the current librarian here at OA. She has an appreciation for students coming together over the common interest of books. She thought that the library felt a little dull and wanted some help revamping the space.
“The committee was first started in 2024 when I came to OA, because this library is for students, and I thought they should have a say in how the library delivers services to the OA community,” Ms. Lane said.
Although the LLC is a small club, the members are dedicated to creating a safe space for students at OA. The senior sophomore sister duo of Alexis and Carina Soto have been members of the LLC since its creation.
“The LLC is bright and fun and it brings happiness and color to the school, especially the library. Not much changes over the school year, so it is something to just liven up the community and put smiles on faces,” Alexis said cheerfully.
The OA library is an integral space for club meetings, tutoring, studying, or ever hanging out to talk with your friends during senior privilege. With all this activity, Ms. Lane and the LLC try to make it the best possible space for students.
“The purpose of the club is to make the library a welcoming place, to encourage reading and to decide which books we should add to our collection. Going forward, we would like to get our social media going and offer more after school activities in the library,” Ms. Lane adds.
“I think most everyone comes here in the morning, just for fun, or just to sit with friends. It’s a very inviting place,” says Carina.
After sharing laughter and sharing good food, at the end of the day, the LLC is for the students, by the students. The LLC seeks to grow the student engagement and wants you to join! The LLC is not all about books, but is more about creating a common space for students to gather and enjoy.
“New students should join the club because it’s an opportunity to gain leadership experience and have a real impact on what happens in the library and beyond. You don’t necessarily have to love reading to be on the LLC—you just have to believe that a library can be a meaningful space for your community members,” Lane says.
