A popular game genre is a roguelike but are they fun? And what are they? And how can you keep losing but still love a game? I’ll be answering the questions
A roguelike is a game where each time you play a game is simply referred to as a “run” because these games don’t follow the same story system a game like Dark Souls 3 has where you play through a story in all one profile.
So you play the game multiple times because these games can be hard and require some luck and a lot of strategy to pull off. Games like Slay The Spire 2 capture this perfectly, Slay The Spire 2 is a difficult game with some hard boss fights but with some planning and luck you can get good enough items to help out.
Roguelikes often require a lot of pre-planning and show off high risk, very satisfying reward and accomplishment.
So if you keep losing, how is it fun? People find them fun by the reward aspect of doing good in the games like defeating a boss and making progress.
Dying a lot doesn’t ruin a game like the previously mentioned Dark Souls 3 is a part of the Dark Souls trilogy which are a lot of hard games. The satisfaction of beating a boss you’ve been stuck on for a while combined with fun gameplay makes for a loyal fanbase and a good time spent learning the game which is also found in every roguelike.
The replayability of roguelikes is also a big selling point, being able to replay the game and do everything different makes them fun and unique. The possibilities feel endless for different builds.
Why do some people not like them? People don’t like having to restart the game every time and do things differently, they also want a clear linear game instead of having to take upon different challenges to get better loot to defeat a difficult boss.
People also don’t like losing a lot as well which is understandable but trial and error is what these games are built off of and the aspect of trying something else.
Roguelikes overall have a positive review and can be big games to small indie projects, all deserve the same amount of love and respect because they are all worked hard on to be fun games for enjoyers of the genre. Do you enjoy them or not? Either way everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
