This past weekend saw the playing of the NFL’s 60th annual Superbowl game that saw the Seattle Seahawks exact their revenge against the New England Patriots. Throughout the game, the action was broken up by the $10 million 30-second ads. The ads this year were pretty lackluster, with only a few standouts. Below are my top 3 commercials that aired during the big game.
The Pepsi Polar Bear: The first ad that stuck out to me was Pepsi’s big campaign. Taking the very popular mascot of the rival Coca Cola to reignite the long lasting brand wars was very clever. Due to the fact that Coke can’t legally trademark the usage of a polar bear, it presented the loophole that Pepsi used to create this commercial. Also touching on the aspect of pop culture by alluding to the viral Coldplay kiss-cam incident from early last year was a fun addition to the ad.
The Dunkin Donuts “Good Will Hunting”: Another favorite of mine was Dunkin Donuts’ spin of the popular movie “Good Will Hunting” with their rendition “Good Will Dunkin.” Featuring many stars from sitcoms’ past including Jennifer Anniston, Alfonso Ribeiro, Ben Affleck, and Jaleel White. The cherry on top was having Tom Brady make a last second appearance to have New England’s favorite son promote New England’s favorite brand. This installment continues Dunkin’s streak of unique commercials packed with famous faces.
The T-Mobile Backstreet Boys: The last commercial that I really liked was the Backstreet boys appearing for T-Mobile. As much as people don’t like to admit it, they all felt the urge to sing along when “I Want It That Way” started playing. Druski’s appearance added another notch on his belt of memorable moments over the course of Superbowl 60 weekend.
