Oliver Ames athletic director Mrs. MacDonald gave an update on the numbers for spring sports this year.
Mrs. MacDonald provides an update as to the total number of athletes signed up for a spring sport this year, noting the number has dropped 8%.
“We have 377 total athletes signed up. It is slightly less than last year. We had 410 last spring.
She also mentions which spring sport has the most athletes.
“Outdoor track has the most sign ups by far with 147 boys and girls combined.”
According to the official MIAA website, the outdoor track numbers this year for Oliver Ames are down compared to last year’s 170 total participants.
Mrs. MacDonald also notes that the amount of cuts was low this spring and gives a reason as to why.
“We only had a few cuts this spring. Overall due to less athletes trying out.”
Numbers have been decreasing for all athletics for all schools in Massachusetts. There were a total of 314,661 athletes enrolled in the 2023-24 school year, according to MIAA. Just a year later in 2024-25, the total enrollment dropped to 307,000.
