The English department at OA this year introduced a new course called Sports Literature.
Ms. Schleicher is the only teacher who is conducting the class this year. She has a passion for sports and chose to take the project on herself.
“I proposed this course as an elective after thinking about a demographic of students here who might not see an elective they were passionate or interested in. It was really just seeing other communities offer a course like this, and thinking it could get kids engaged with literature more, especially if they enjoyed the topic.”
Sports Literature is a course that allows the topics of sports and literature to intersect to make a class for children that are interested in both topics. This creates interest and motivation for Seniors to learn, as there is the notorious Senior Slump.
“I think sometimes kids get stuck in the mindset of ‘I hate reading’ and might just have a bad vibe before actually attempting to have an open mind. In addition I think sometimes kids don’t want to admit they enjoy something or relate to something for fear of judgements from peers, which is a shame. There are so many relatable moments in things we read, especially for our student athletes, I think they have more connections than they’re willing to let on sometimes.”
A lot of work goes into preparing for the classes. Ms. Schleicher is the first person to create this course, so all of the work is her own.
“I would be crazy to think everything is smooth sailing right now; we have a lot of room for growth and potential. There are so many resources and ideas out there, it’s really finding the best direction for our students here at O.A. It’s also a semester course, so figuring out the pacing is interesting. I am thankful that even next semester I can try again what worked well, and adjust what needs to be adjusted for better results and impact.”
As the ‘25-’26 school year has already started, most students may not join the class now. If you are looking into joining the Sport Literature class next year, Ms. Schelicher would love to have you.
“Reading and writing is a part of all our English courses. What can make or break any learning environment is reading about things that you might enjoy. If the realm of athletics is something you enjoy, then this course could be a great pathway for a student. There are many different angles of sports that we cover, so there is something for everyone.”
