With The OA Musical auditions coming up Tuesday (12.9), knowing these tips and tricks from Musical veterans will really help you during auditions!
- Research the musical and the role you want to play
Researching the musical you’re going to audition to be in is crucial to get in the right headspace for an audition! Whether it’s watching the musical online or just simply doing a quick google search, the more you know about the musical and the character, the more set up you are to be successful.
Will Su, a senior at Oliver Ames and an active member of the OA musical community says that researching the musical and the character you want to play can help you feel confident in your audition.
“I think that it’s important to research the show and character that you’re auditioning for in advance to be able to make funny choices. Musicals are meant to be a fun show for people to enjoy, and comedy is a big element of that. It also boosts confidence for the audition to already be familiar with the material.”
- Memorize any audition song you are asked to sing
Memorizing the audition song can drastically change your audition. This allows you to feel confident and fully prepared for auditions. If you struggle with anxiety revolving around auditioning, memorizing can be the extra step to ease that stress.
Colleen O’Connell, a junior and member of the Oliver Ames Musical, says that memorizing your song before auditioning can ease the stress of performing.
“It’s important to memorize your audition song in advance because it helps with anxiety when performing. If you are not prepared, you can get nervous and not remember your song on the spot but if you memorize it you’ll have an easier time remembering it.”
- Dress appropriately for the audition
Wearing activewear and moveable clothing helps you to be able to move comfortably and showcase your dance ability to the most. Wearing stiff clothing can make you less able to move freely and showcase your talent.
Gabby Romero, a junior at Oliver Ames and a member of the Oliver Ames Musical, says that wearing appropriate clothing can drastically improve your performance.
“It’s important to wear appropriate clothing for the audition because you want to be sure you can move safely in what you wear and you don’t want to feel stiff or unable to move freely in what clothes you have on.”
