In an environment where student voices are very important, Principal Cavanaugh has put together a student voice union with the goal of emphasizing the perspectives of the students of OA. With issues such as the controversial bathroom policy, the balance between staff, admin, and student thoughts is key.
The students in this council are juniors Kit Perron, Kayla Isleib, and Mabrina Louis-Jacques; as well as sophomores John Clarke and Samantha Pircio. They are advised by Ms. Brown. These students attended a Hockomock League summit earlier this year where they met with other students from across the surrounding districts to strengthen their skills.
Mrs. Cavanaugh’s goal for this union is to have a more effective system for student voice. After sending out the bathroom survey and seeing a huge gap between student and staff responses, she’s hoping that these five students can give her a more accurate representation of what is truly happening with this issue.
This group of students will be holding a meeting during the week of midyears to discuss the data collected about the policy and help admin come to a better conclusion on this schoolwide controversy.
