Just days before February break and spirit week has started! People are dressed in their pajamas and showing up in their Patriot’s gear to show support for the Super Bowl. Seeing the joy on people’s faces, laughing, and screaming with their friends at the pep rallies.
But not everyone participates on school spirit days, leading us to ask: What is the state of school spirit at OA?
“We have teachers really getting into musical chairs in pep rallies, students going hard with dress up days, and the majority of the school attending dances – that is really awesome and specific to the OA community!” said Student Council co-advisor Ms. Murphy, who gives OA an A-.
Ms.Doulette, a chem teacher, graded spirit as a C+.
“Because I think a majority of people don’t participate but then we do have some,” Doulette says. “Like that dedicated student section composed of seniors that go to every single sports game and during pep rallies”.
Overall all teachers and students can 100% say the seniors show more spirit than the rest of school. Mrs. Cavanaugh mentions the first year after Covid was the most amount of spirit she had seen. The most important part about spirit week or spirit days is to embrace our school and show our support to the community.
Lindsey Solomon, senior class president, gave our school an A-.
“Compared to other schools it’s very shocking,” Solomon says. “Looking at other student sections, we show more pride and support than others. I feel like whenever we dress a little, somehow that’s bigger than what other schools are.”
Mr. Pomella, who has won an award for most likely to go all out for spirit days, thinks spirit is strong.
“I’d give it an A minus because there’s always room to grow,” Pomella says. “I’ve seen other schools and we have way more school spirit here than other schools. My children’s school doesn’t have spirit week at all. If they did, like 5 kids would dress up.”
At the end of the day students try to show up with spirit only when we most need it. Yet the whole concept is to try everyday. Dress-up days are meant to be fun and unique which usually happen before breaks.
“I love them! It is so fun to see how people interpret the themes and go all out. I would love for even more dress up day participation. -it is a nice change from the regular school day” said Ms. Murphy.
All grades individually show their own effort in spirit. Junior Ryann Mackinlay, overall gave a B.

“Senior class I’d give an A because especially the boys and girls are really into it, Juniors a C+, Freshman and Sophomores an F. So the whole school overall I’d give it a B- because of the variations of all grades individually,” said Mackinlay.
