Lots of changes are ahead for the rising seniors of OA. The English department, headed by Mrs. Marani, has made some huge changes regarding course options, including getting rid of the “senior english” class in general.
The accelerated full year class options for next year include AP Literature and Composition, SUPA Academic Writing (a dual enrollment course with Syracuse University) and Honors Spaces in Literature. The CP half year elective options include Children’s Literature, Detective Fiction, Media Literacy, Preparatory English, Public Speaking, and Sports in Literature.
The goal behind the change was to make sure every student has a chance to take a class that will truly interest them. Even if the topic of the class does not directly interest them, it is hopeful that one of the class options will help students with what they want to do in the future.
“Our children’s literature class is spending time connecting at Blanche Ames. Our public speaking class is doing real, authentic experiences, kind of like, persuading our administration.” said Mrs. Marani, “So for me, I feel like it’s really giving students more of an access point that says ‘Here’s what I want to do with my life, and here’s the things that might help me’ or at least ‘here’s the things that I’m interested in that also align with this particular subject’.”
For those who are very interested in English, there is an option to mix and match these courses. Students in AP Lit are able to take a half year elective, although priority is given to students who need to take an English class first.
“For me, I feel like, while I love English, and I want as many students to love it as possible. I know that we have to be able to give kids different ways in.” said Mrs. Marani
With all of these changes in the schedule, Mrs. Marani, as well as the entire English department, wants students to know they are available with any questions. No matter what you’re into, chances are with these new additions and schedule changes, there is an English class for you.
