For many high school students, the St. Patrick’s Day parade is more than a celebration. It’s practically a tradition. From catching the early train to sticking with friends in the crowded streets, experienced parade goers give a little advice for newcomers who plan on going this Sunday.
It is regular that everyone goes to the parade, especially high schoolers. In order to get through the parade while being safe and following the rules there are steps to take to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Lin Cooper, a senior at Oliver Ames High School had a few pieces of advice.
“I would say number one take the Mansfield train because it is like a direct train there. I would suggest leaving your house at 7 latest to make it like an 8 o’clock or 9 o’clock train because then there will be spots to sit and room on the train.” Cooper said.”If you go by noon on the train you will definitely not get a seat or get into the parade at all.”
Planning on the time to go and when to leave is very important because you definitely do not want to be late or miss anything. Keeping your phone available and using the buddy system is key to being safe. A senior, Gabriella Nastasia who has been to the parade a few times knows what to do and what not to do.
“If I had to give some tips for beginners going to the parade I would first start by saying make sure your phone is fully charged. Also when you’re there you are not gonna have any service at all so stay with your friends and make some form of buddy system to not get lost” Nastasia said, “Make sure you also know the train schedules and where your train stations are. Typically, people from Easton go to the Mansfield train station to South Station. Pretty much have fun and be safe!!”
Taking the right train is huge to ensure your safety. Getting on the wrong train is the last thing you want to do because most likely you are going to end up on the wrong side of Boston or in a completely different town. Another senior, Abby Cady, has some advice for what train to take.
“Some advice would be to go with a group of probably minimum 5 people and make sure you take the right train. You should get off at South Station and don’t get on another train unless it is taking you back to Mansfield. The majority of the people get off at South Station so if you get off at Andrews then you are not gonna be able to find any of your friends so stay with them.”
Lastly, staying hydrated and fed is most important, so nobody gets hurt. Many people take water and snacks because stores there are usually closed.
Cooper has the best secret snack to bring that will fill you up and is also festive!!
“Bring snacks!!!!! One of the best snacks is Lucky Charms because they are festive for St. Patty’s Day and they are so good!!” Lin said, “Also make sure you go with a group of friends and bring fanny packs or keep your bag in front of you so you can see it!”
