When heading into the spring season, students at Oliver Ames are gearing up to pick their classes for next year. If there is an empty spot in their schedule, students should consider taking Journalism.
Many classes here follow the same structure and are monotonous. Journalism is different from any and all other classes here. There is never a day the same as another.
“It is kind of an extra curricular class, like a club, but it meets during class time,” said teacher Mr. Schussler. “There is no other class in the school like this. What you do in the class is something you’re going to immediately share with the school. If you want to be a part of the school, but time is an issue, it’s giving students 45 to 50 minutes to actually do what you would do in a club.”
The class is responsible for creating all aspects of the school newspaper, the Tiger Daily (tigerdaily.org).
Graduating senior, Nick Poulos, took Journalism his senior year. He is the current sports editor and an integral part of the Tiger Daily team. He claims that Journalism would be a great addition to your schedule.
“My experience has been great in this class,” said Poulos. “I think there have been hard times with getting stories out with our limited people, but it has been a fun and positive experience with everything we’ve built. I think that’s all what makes it entertaining and fun to come into everyday and write about interesting things.”
Lauren Daigle, a senior, is part of the Tiger Daily social media team. She laughs while answering questions, showcasing the fun times that are had in Journalism.
“I think this is a really fun and easy class if you’re interested in journalism, social media, pictures, or sports. There is something for everyone and I think it’s pretty fun”, says Lauren Daigle.
Overall Journalism is the perfect add to your 2026-2027 course schedule. If you have any interest in writing, we would love to have you on the Tiger Daily staff.
“The goal of this class is to help students that want to enter any realm of communications for a career path. That would include anything from advertising, social media, sports management, any kind of job that would involve them working in any sort of media outlet. Today any media outlet is a vast umbrella, which isn’t just a traditional newspaper, it includes anything with print and the internet, so if students are going to and want to write and get paid, this is great to get experience,” Mr. Schussler said.
If interested, talk to your guidance counselor today. It’s not too late to add Journalism to your schedule for next year.
