The Oliver Ames boys hockey team is coming off of a tough 2-17-1, 2024-25 season but will look to improve this upcoming season. They will kick off their season on December 13th against Newton South and will look to get off to a strong start.
Head coach Jimmy Tierney has some goals for his team this season.
“Our first and foremost goal is to grow as a team this year. Establishing a positive team culture early on in the season will help us to achieve additional goals if playing the right way, which will help us translate to wins. We would love to make a run at the state tournament this season.”
With the start of the new season comes new players who will have the opportunity to make a name for themselves. Coach Tierney highlights the importance of new guys becoming leaders as being an important part of this season.
“We feel good about the team going into the season. We know we lost a lot of leadership, and points from last year, but we are excited about the opportunity that others will have to step up, and contribute to our team’s success.”
Senior captain Frankie Marchion also believes the team is capable of a successful season.
“I feel that we have solid guys and that we can make our way into the playoffs. Our team has skilled and talented players.”
A team’s mindset can be an important part to having a good season. Frankie and the rest of the team are looking to make a playoff push.
“The team’s mindset going into the upcoming season is that we are going to do everything it takes to get into the tournament and to try and win as many games as we possibly can.”
Senior captain Brendan Teehan says he is excited to be a captain for this year’s team.
“Being a captain for this team is an honor and I’m happy that the boys on the team picked me to lead them.”
Both Frankie and Brendan understand the importance of being a captain of a team and the leadership that comes with it. Frankie knows that being a good leader can have an impact on people who look up to him.
“What it’s like being a captain of the team is that you have to be a leader and you have to be in control. It is also good to have a good mindset because the underclassmen and other people look up to the older guys so you have to set a good example.”
Coach Tierney points out the players that we should be on the lookout for this season.
“Brendan Teehan is a returning captain and leading goal scorer from last season. We will look for him to set the pace offensively for us. Jace Peardon and Adam Tobin also expect to be big contributors for us on offense. On defense, Owen Stares will return to the back end and help play shut down defense for us. In goal, Josh DeVito and Ronan Blaney are returning from last year where they split time.”
Brendan Teehan feels confident in the team’s ability to improve this season.
“We definitely have things to work on, but with our great coaches they will help us to succeed as much as we can.”
Coach Tierney acknowledges that there is more depth on the team as opposed to last year.
“This year’s team, compared to last, looks to be deeper than we were. We will look to rely on this depth to help propel our team.”
