Each winter, the Town of Easton organizes a rec basketball league that spans from January to March. The league consists of 10 teams, each with about 10 players. It usually costs $120 to sign up.
‘Senior Rec’ as it’s called, is the league that students in high school participate in. This league usually consists of seniors in high school, but any student in high school may participate in the league. Most of the players have some experience playing basketball, others play just to spend time with their friends.
Tommy Regan, a senior, is playing his third year of rec basketball.
“I play because it allows me to hang out with my friends and I enjoy playing basketball.”
Most kids play in the rec league because it is not as intense as playing a sport for the school and it allows them to have more fun playing.
“I love getting out there with my friends having a good time,” said Jacob Nikiciuk, a senior who has been playing rec basketball since sophomore year. “It’s something to really enjoy. Just appreciate getting out there with my friends and playing something where you don’t always have to focus on winning and more about having a good time.”
There can be a big difference between the intensity and skill level when it comes to comparing rec basketball to playing a school sport. But when it comes to playing against your friends, you always want to win.
“I think if you play against a team that is competitive and you have friends on the other team too and there is competitiveness with that. It’s definitely different because you don’t have a coach and there can be more competitiveness going against your friends.”
