With 14 seconds remaining in Tuesday’s game against North Attleboro, down 47-46, the season for the girls basketball team was ticking away by the second.
Olivia Strom inbounded the ball to Mari Rhodes. Rhodes drove down the court, eventually passing the ball to Maeve Horsman. Horsman’s pass was deflected out of bounds by a North Attleboro player and OA was left with 2.6 seconds left.
Coach Costello called a timeout to draw up a play for a last second miracle.
It looked like the ball would go to Avery Gamble, but when Brie Antebi found herself open in the lane, with the help of a great pass from Rhodes, Antebi hit the game winning layup.
“The thought was people thought Avery was going to get the shot, and the play could have potentially gotten Avery a shot as well,” coach Costello said. “It was also designed to take them out of the lane because they have so much size.”
The play was specifically designed for Brie to get the ball and it worked out perfectly.
“The reason Brie slipped to the basket is because usually in a stack, one of the first people is more likely to jump out. So, she would probably have a clear path.”
