Football has always been a big part of Luke Fernald’s life and this year it means more to him than it ever has in his senior year.
Luke grew up in a football environment. He got into football through his dad, who was a coach.
“He coached football for a while, high school and college. Kind of growing up and watching him coach football and how he talks to me about football in general and it made my love for the sport grow.”
Luke started his football career at Oliver Ames freshman year, but transferred to Sharon his junior year. He is now back at OA for his Senior year and he’s happy to be back.
“It feels great to be back. Sharon had a good atmosphere and definitely was very competitive with academics. But at the same time, being someone who is very competitive when it comes to football and being someone who loves football as much as I do, I want to be in the best place to be with the people that I grew up with and that makes it feel that much better to be back.”
OA football means a lot to Luke because of the memories that he has made and the experiences that he has had.
“Before I left OA I loved the team and my teammates. I loved everything about it and now that I’m back and realise what it was like to not be playing for OA. It means everything to be back. OA football is always going to hold a special place for me.”
For now, Luke has his mind set on this season and is feeling good after getting his first win as a varsity starter against Cardinal Spellman.
“It felt good. I think the main thing is just keep it going and I think for a lot of guys we have a predominately junior starting lineup and a big thing is just keep it rolling and to not get complacent or content considering we do play in one of the toughest leagues in Massachusetts so there’s going to be a lot of hard games coming up that we need to compete in a take out a couple of these bigger teams.”
